Project Lead

Four years ago the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office began offering Project LEAD (Legal Enrichment And Decision-making) program to elementary schools in Ventura County. Project LEAD is a highly-rated program for fifth-grade students that was first implemented in Los Angeles County in 1993. Its goal is simple: To teach children that the choices they make today can affect their lives forever. The program’s 20-week curriculum introduces scholars to the guiding principles of our criminal justice system and addresses a number of topics that bear on the prevention of juvenile delinquency. The emphasis on respect and understanding of the reasons behind laws separates Project LED from most youth programs. While interacting with professionals from the District Attorney’s Office, scholars are exposed to positive role models and learn coping and decision-making skills at a critical stage of their social development. The program concludes with a mock trial exercise at the county courthouse.
