The Second Annual Dr. Sheryl Barnd Memorial Swim Challenge

Hello again Mupu Families,
The second annual Dr. Sheryl Barnd Memorial Swim Challenge is slated to begin tomorrow, August 1st, and will continue through August 31st. This event was first held last July as a way to pay tribute to Dr. Barnd's dedication to Mupu by honoring her love of the water and life as a swimmer, swim coach, and swim instructor.

Attached is a flyer, social media graphic, and a donation/sponsorship form for all scholars and families who are interested in participating. Mupu scholars and families are encouraged to participate in the following ways:

1. As a swimmer seeking sponsorships/donations (see attached sponsorship form and event information)

2. As a volunteer helping to spread the word and seek donations/sponsorships for the event (see attached flyer and social media graphic)

This event is organized through the Mupu Parents Club with all proceeds from the Swim Challenge going directly back to Mupu scholars as well as to the newly established Dr. Sheryl Barned Memorial Scholarship.

Business/corporate sponsorships and donations are welcome. All donations and sponsorships are tax deductible. Letters/receipts for business//corporate sponsorships are available. Please contact Jannette Jauregui for a letter/receipt (see contact information below).

History of the Event

As many of you know, Dr. Barnd passed away on June 24th, 2022, leaving behind an amazing legacy as an educator/administrator, mentor, and coach. The Swim Challenge was established quickly and became an incredible success thanks to donations from countless community members from throughout Ventura County and beyond.

More than $7,000 was raised last year, making the event the highest earning fundraiser in Mupu's history. The success of the Swim Challenge resulted in the creation of the Dr. Sheryl Barnd Memorial Scholarship, designed specifically for a Santa Paula High School graduate that meets one of the three qualifications listed below in order of priority:

1. Mupu graduate and member of SPHS swim team or water polo team
2. Mupu graduate
3. Member of SPHS swim team or water polo team

The first ever Dr. Sheryl Barnd Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Fabian Garcia in May 2023, a Mupu alumnus and 2023 Santa Paula High School graduate. Dr. Marlene Batista attended the scholarship night event to give the award.

Our goal is to make this year's event even more successful. Again, we encourage all Mupu scholars and families to participate in honoring Dr. Barnd's life by spending the month of August in the water and raising money for Mupu.

Wishing you well,
Jannette Jauregui
